Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Facts - Background

In connection with the Swegene-investment a MRI system for animal studies was purchased and placed at EBM. The equipment has been used for a number of years, but for various reasons has not been used so much in recent years. In connection with the development of Imaging and Intervention Center at SU and VGR there is great interest among some research groups to use this MR system again.

The equipment is a 7 T MR system from Bruker with a selection of RF coils (volume and surface coils), capable of monitoring of temperature, respiration, ECG and blood pressure. The equipment has couches for rodents, fish and birds. The object can have a maximum diameter of 72 mm, which is suitable for e.g. mouse, small rat, small hamster, fish, birds, young animals, limbs and tissue biopsies. The advantages of MRI are that it is a non-invasive method and does not include ionizing radiation, which can be advantageous in certain types of studies.
